Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Number of new vehicles registered grew 6.2% in 2025 YoY - association

Lisbon, Jan. 2, 2026 (Lusa) - The number of new vehicles placed on the roads in Portugal reached 264,821 in 2025, representing an increase of 6.2% compared to the same period in 2024, the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP) announced on Friday.

From January to December, registrations of light passenger vehicles totalled 225,039 units, representing a 7.3% increase over the same period in 2024.

In 2025, 69.7% of new light passenger vehicles were powered by other types of energy, namely electric or hybrid, and, in particular, 23.2% of new light passenger vehicles were electric.

As for heavy vehicles, in the twelve months of 2025, registrations in this category totalled 7,481 units, representing a 3.2% increase in the market compared to the same period in 2024.

In December, 24,978 motor vehicles were registered in Portugal, i.e. 3% more than in the same month of 2024. Of these 24,978 vehicles, 20,879 were passenger cars, representing an increase of 3.5% compared to the same period last year.

In the last month of 2025, the light goods vehicle market recorded a negative growth of 2.2% compared to the same month of the previous year, with 3,498 units registered.

As for the heavy vehicle market, which includes passenger and goods vehicles, December 2025 saw an increase of 24.4% compared to the same month in 2024, with 601 vehicles in this category being sold.
