Maputo, Dec. 8, 2025 (Lusa) - The President of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, is meeting on Monday in Portugal's second city, Porto, with the Mozambican community living in the region, the first official event of his working visit to Portugal until Tuesday, the day of the bilateral summit.
Mozambican authorities estimate that around 10,000 Mozambican nationals live in Portugal and, according to a diplomatic source, the meeting with the community will take place at a hotel in the city of Porto, as part of Daniel Chapo's second working visit to Portugal in five months, having been sworn in last January as the fifth president of the Republic of Mozambique.
This country wants to "deepen" economic cooperation and promote partnerships with Portugal at Tuesday's bilateral summit in Porto, according to the Mozambican Presidency.
"The VI Bilateral Summit aims to deepen political and economic cooperation, promote investment and business partnerships, as well as discuss strategic areas such as finance, public administration, digitalisation and renewable energy," the Presidency said in a statement sent to Lusa, confirming Daniel Chapo's visit to Porto, northern Portugal, from 7 to 9 December.
It added that during the summit on Tuesday, which will also be attended by Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and 22 ministers from both countries, the signing of legal instruments for cooperation in various areas, including education, health, agriculture and energy, is planned.
"During the visit, the Mozambican president will hold a tête-à-tête with Portuguese prime minister Luís Montenegro, during which both will exchange views on the political, economic and social situation in their countries, as well as addressing issues of common interest in the context of bilateral relations," explains the Mozambican presidency office in the same statement.
Also on the official agenda, Daniel Chapo will participate in the opening session of the Economic Forum promoted by the Portuguese Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade (AICEP), an event parallel to the summit, also in Porto, on Friday, "aimed at strengthening business opportunities and business cooperation between the two countries."
According to the Presidency, this working visit "is an opportunity to continue deepening the political dialogue that characterises relations between Mozambique and Portugal, as well as to strengthen ties of friendship, solidarity and cooperation".
