CNA - Vehicle registrations down 1.1% in H1, saloon cars drop 3%

Total motor vehicle registrations in Cyprus fell in the first half of 2025, according to data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service.

Specifically, registrations reached 25,954, marking a 1.1% decrease compared to 26,250 in the corresponding period of 2024.

Despite the overall decline over the six-month period, June showed a positive trend, with a 13.1% increase in registrations, rising to 4,942 from 4,369 in June 2024. Registrations of saloon passenger cars rose by 9.7%, reaching 3,780.

Decline in saloons, growth in hybrid and electric vehicles

Between January and June, saloon passenger car registrations dropped by 3.0% to 20,004, from 20,623 a year earlier. Of these, 8,221 (41.1%) were new and 11,783 (58.9%) were used vehicles. Notably, rental car registrations rose by 22.8% to 2,820.

In terms of fuel type, petrol-powered saloon cars accounted for 43.6% of total saloon registrations (down from 49.5%), and diesel vehicles dropped to 8.6% (from 10.0%). In contrast, electric vehicles rose to 4.8% (from 3.3%), and hybrid vehicles increased to 43.0% (from 37.2%).

Mixed trends in other vehicle categories

Bus registrations declined to 78 (from 87), while goods transport vehicles increased by 2.7%, reaching 3,055. Within this category, light trucks rose by 4.5% to 2,476 and heavy trucks by 1.5% to 346. Rental trucks fell by 20.7% to 119, and road tractors (trailers) decreased slightly by 0.9% to 114.

Moped registrations (under 50cc) dropped significantly to 112 during the January–June 2025 period, compared to 399 in the same period of 2024. Meanwhile, motorcycle registrations (over 50cc) rose by 31.3% to 2,364, from 1,800 a year earlier.
