The president of the spanish news agecny EFE, Miguel Ángel Oliver, said in Madrid that EFE generates “good and truthful” information and that it is “guarantor of the clean river of information”.
Oliver made this statement at the inauguration of the new course of the Master in Agency Journalism taught by the University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) and EFE, in which he stressed that EFE is an example “of good journalism” in an era “in which there is a shortage of good and truthful information”.
“We are anonymous journalists, we will not have known faces, but our texts, our information is truthful,” said Oliver, who added that the journalist is the channel, the channel, but never the protagonist of the news.
Before the 16 students attending this course, including two Bolivian and one Ecuadorian, UC3M professors and EFE journalists who will teach the classes, gathered in the auditorium of UC3M's Puerta de Toledo campus, Oliver said that although this profession is “poorly paid and reviled, it makes you fall in love” and, addressing the students, he encouraged them to learn to tell stories, stories, to inform, as has been done throughout history. “It is necessary to tell the story in a truthful, balanced way, without interference,” said Oliver.
Oliver said that with the arrival of social networks, the traditional media no longer represent that mediating role and that in this new scenario the agencies, EFE, has a lot to offer, “it is the guarantor of the clean river of information”.
He also stressed that the press is the “brick that gives stability to the wall of democracy”.
He emphasized that journalism is currently practiced by women on a massive scale and he advocated for promoting the presence of women in EFE's Sports Department.
The opening ceremony was held in the auditorium of UC3M's Puerta de Toledo campus and was presided over by Oliver, Pilar Carrera, director of the master's program; Erika Rodríguez Pinzón, director of the Carolina Foundation, which is providing scholarships to two Latin American students, and Carlos Gosch, co-director of the master's program and director of EFE's School of Journalism.
Erika Rodríguez emphasized the importance of “quality” journalism in the construction of informed, democratic societies and highlighted the importance of Spanish as a “strategic element” in Latin American policies.
Pilar Carreras stressed the responsibility of the journalist today and Carlos Gosch told the students that they are beginning “an exciting journey, a formidable challenge” as it is to tell what is happening.
