Turning journalists into stateless persons ‘is a crime against humanity’ and forcing them to take the path of exile ‘is a way of silencing critical voices’, denounced the president of the Spanish News Agency EFE, Miguel Ángel Oliver, during the presentation of the Latin American Network of Journalism in Exile (Relpex).
‘Turning many journalists into stateless persons: this is a crime against humanity and exile is another way of silencing critical voices, another form of censorship against the press. It is not a temporary condition or an emergency situation that requires relocation to another country, it is a permanent, long-term condition that imposes immense challenges for the practice of journalism and for survival itself,’ said Oliver.
In his speech, Oliver praised the ‘giant step’ that the creation of Relpex, a network promoted by the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), represents.
