Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Electricity prices lower than Spain, EU average in H1

Lisbon, Oct. 28, 2024 (Lusa) - Average electricity prices in Portugal in the first half of the year were lower than those in Spain and the European Union (EU) average in the domestic and non-domestic segments, the regulator said on Monday.

According to the Electricity Price Comparison Bulletin, released by the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE), based on data from the European Union Statistics Office (Eurostat), during the first six months of the year, Spain's average electricity prices were 5% and 13% higher than Portugal's, for the domestic and non-domestic segments, respectively.

In the first half of the year, Portugal recorded a 15% increase in electricity prices in the domestic segment, compared to the same half of the previous year, "which is essentially because the CIEG [costs of general economic interest] have returned to positive values, after the negative values of previous semesters," ERSE pointed out.

In Spain, the price of electricity fell by 16% compared to the same period last year, and in the Euro Area and the European Union by 13% in both cases. Even so, the average price in Portugal remains below average in Spain, the European Union and the Eurozone.

In the domestic sector, the average price in Portugal was 0.2539 euros per kilowatt-hour (kWh), while in Spain, it was €0.2657 per kWh.

The average in EU countries was €0.3010 per kWh (+19% compared to Portugal), and the euro area average was €0.3195 per kWh (+26% compared to Portugal).

As far as the non-domestic sector is concerned, Portugal recorded an average of €0.1332 per kWh, Spain €0.1501 (+13%), the EU €0.1970 (+48%) and the euro area €0.2033 (+53%).

In the EU context, up until the end of June, average electricity prices for the domestic segment were lowest in Hungary, Bulgaria, Malta and Croatia, while Germany, Ireland, Denmark and Czechia had the highest average electricity prices.

For the non-household consumer segment, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Bulgaria had the lowest average electricity prices in that period. In contrast, Ireland, Cyprus, Germany and Croatia had the highest average prices.
