Lisbon, Oct. 28, 2024 (Lusa) - According to a cabinet resolution published on Monday, Portugal's National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) have six months to present the plan and timetable for the National Roadmap for the Decarbonisation of Aviation (RONDA).
The document published in Diário da República establishes that "a detailed RONDA plan and timetable of specific actions and targets for the short, medium and long term, developed by ANAC in conjunction with APA, I.P., and approved by the members of the government, shall be presented within six months".
That plan must also include a "continuous monitoring and evaluation mechanism, with annual reports being sent to the government on the progress made, challenges identified and corrective measures proposed".
The minister for the environment and energy announced on 4 October that the government is proceeding with the creation of a national roadmap for the decarbonisation of aviation and will invest €40 million in the production of sustainable fuels.
This measure, announced after the cabinet meeting, was created as part of a strategy to "decarbonise the aviation sector, through the creation of the Aviation Sustainability Alliance (ASA), made up of the government, air carriers, airports, environmental NGOs, academia and different entities and companies in the sector", according to a government document.
According to the same source, it involves encouraging the "production and use of sustainable fuels", with €40 million via the Environmental Fund to support this production.
According to the cabinet resolution published today, the monitoring and management of RONDA and ASA are the responsibility of ANAC and APA, "and the resources necessary for the proper execution of the mandate must be ensured, namely concerning financing and the technical and specialised training of the entities".
