Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Government announces €50 more for elderly solidarity allowance

Guarda, Portugal, Oct. 1, 2026 (Lusa) - The prime minister announced today a €50 increase in the solidarity allowance for the elderly (CSI) in 2027, bringing it to €720.

Speaking to journalists at the end of the cabinet meeting held in the city of Guarda, the prime minister said that «the increase will be €50 and, therefore, the reference amount will rise to €720».

The government's programme aims to reach €870 in 2029; the current figure stands at €670, which will rise to €720 in 2027.

«Today, which is International Day of Older Persons, I can announce that the State Budget will include the decision to increase the reference amount of the solidarity supplement for older people for the fourth time,» announced Luís Montenegro.

In other words, «this represents a significant increase compared with the amount in force in April 2024», when the government took office, noting that the reference amount was €550 then.

The prime minister also said the government «continues to count on the participation and active involvement» of people who are «younger for longer» in its mission to «make the country more prosperous and fairer».

«A country where quality of life and well-being are available to all, regardless of age group or the location of their homes and residences within the community,» he added.

This «spirit of territorial cohesion», explained Luís Montenegro, was what led the government to meet in Guarda to «interact with the mayors of the district's municipalities, with whom the government is holding a working lunch».

The economy minister, Manuel Castro Almeida, also spoke to journalists at the end of the cabinet meeting to provide further details on the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), which was the main topic of the meeting.

When asked about the government's planned support for families and businesses in the future, Castro Almeida reiterated Luís Montenegro's announcement, confirming that measures have been taken to «support the families most vulnerable» to the crisis.

«The government has been taking these measures within the clearly stated limit of preserving the balance of public finances. The government demonstrated this recently when we allocated €800 million to increase the lowest pensions and €400 million to reduce taxes up to the sixth tax bracket,» he argued.

In this regard, Castro Almeida acknowledged that «there is a willingness to support families facing the greatest difficulties while preserving the balance of public finances, which is essential for families and businesses alike», he emphasised.
