Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Commission insists nation complies with maritime safety rules

Brussels, Oct. 1, 2026 (Lusa) - The European Commission once again urged Portugal on Thursday to comply with European Union (EU) maritime safety legislation, after sending a reasoned opinion.

The legislation in question, the government specifies, sets out safety requirements for ships, port facilities and ports, as well as defining procedures for maritime transport safety inspections – measures it considers important for strengthening the security of ports and ships against the threat of intentional unlawful acts and for enhancing the resilience of the EU's critical infrastructure.

The Commission had sent a letter of formal notice to Lisbon on 1 November 2025, but now considers that «further administrative and monitoring activities are necessary to confirm that the EU legislation on maritime security is being effectively applied.» Portugal now has two months to respond and take the necessary measures. If the Commission considers further action necessary, it may refer the matter to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
