Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Stock market trading in sea of red on Thursday morning

Lisbon, Oct. 1, 2026 (Lusa) - The Lisbon stock market was trading lower on Thursday morning, with all PSI shares falling, led by Sonae, which was down 2.85% to €2.05.

At around 9.45 am in Lisbon, the benchmark PSI (Portuguese Stock Index) was down 1.92% to 9,481.42 points, with share prices of all 16 constituent companies falling.

Sonae's shares were followed by those of BCP, NOS and Galp, which were down 2.63%  to €1.18, 2.60%  to €5.24 and 2.54%  to €21.88 respectively.

Also falling by more than 2% were CTT and Teixeira Duarte, which dropped 2.36% to €6 and 2.22% to €0.48 respectively.

To a lesser extent, Jerónimo Martins, EDP and EDP Renewables fell by 1.62% to €17.64, 1.57% to €4.77 and 1.55% to €12.67 respectively.

Mota-Engil, Corticeira Amorim and REN fell by 1.18% to €5.04, 0.99% to €7.03 and 0.84% to €3.53 respectively.

Semapa and Altri fell by 0.74% to €20.2 and 0.53% to €4.65 respectively.

The other two companies whose share prices fell were Navigator (-0.25% to €3.20) and Ibersol (-0.10% to €9.9).

In Europe, the main stock markets opened lower today, with falls of more than 1% percent, in a session where attention is focused on the release of various manufacturing sector indices.

The euro was weaker against the dollar, falling by 0.24% to $1.1303 on the Frankfurt foreign exchange market.

The price of the benchmark Brent crude oil contract in Europe fell by 3.54% to $99.87.

Meanwhile, yields on ten-year US government bonds soared to 5.331%, whilst the yield on the ten-year German government bond also rose to 3.627%.

Iran is showing signs of wanting to pursue a diplomatic path with the United States after seven months of conflict, whilst maintaining a military presence in the Strait of Hormuz, where the Revolutionary Guard claims to be continuing to block the passage of ships by attacking vessels and states that Washington has not responded to these actions for some time.

The market is also showing concern over Russia's warning to NATO that it would use military force, including nuclear weapons, against the allies if they attempt to block the Kaliningrad enclave, situated between Poland and Lithuania.

US index futures show a 0.44% fall for the Dow Jones and a 0.59% rise for the technology-heavy Nasdaq, after closing mixed on Wednesday.

The macroeconomic calendar will be dominated by the release of manufacturing purchasing managers' indices (PMIs) from the major economies of the eurozone, the UK and the US, including the S&P Global PMIs and the US ISM Manufacturing Index, compiled by the Institute for Supply Management, which measures demand for goods in the US economy.
