Lusa - Business News - Angola: Benguela Basin block 24 has high quality gas reserves - concessionaire

Luanda, Aug. 6, 2026 (Lusa) - ANPG, the Angolan oil concessionaire announced on Thursday that drilling and testing operations at the Katambi-2 appraisal well, in Block 24 of the Benguela Basin, have confirmed the existence of high-quality gas reservoirs.

The announcement was made in a statement by the National Agency for Oil, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG), the national concessionaire, and by Sonangol Exploration & Production, the operator of Block 24, highlighting that the drilling and testing operations were completed safely and successfully.

The statement specified that the Katambi-2 well was drilled 1.3 kilometres from the Katambi-1 well, traversing two productive intervals with a total thickness of approximately 331 metres, confirming the existence of high-quality reservoirs with an average porosity of between 9% and 12% and good permeability, higher than that recorded in the Katambi -1, drilled in 2014/2015.

According to the statement, initial tests recorded a stabilised daily production of 41 million standard cubic feet (MMscfd) of gas and 1,160 barrels per day (BBL/d) of condensates, «with no water or hydrogen sulphide present, reinforcing the economic viability of developing the discovery and its potential contribution to optimising national production».

«This is the first full development test and flow (Full DTS) carried out on a non-associated gas reservoir in Angola. A preliminary assessment of the test results indicated that the well has the potential to produce more than 100 MMscfd,» the statement reads.
