Lusa - Business News - Portugal: PM hopes US-Iran deal will have 'positive economic impact'

Lisbon, June 15, 2026 (Lusa) - Portugal's prime minister welcomed on Monday the agreement reached between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, expressing the hope that it would pave the way for a return to diplomatic channels with a view to peace and that it would have “a positive economic impact”.

In a post on Twitter, Luís Montenegro also said he hoped the agreement would allow for “the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a return to diplomatic channels to address Tehran’s nuclear programme, and an end to Iranian attacks on neighbouring countries”.

“Regional peace and stability are essential, and freedom of navigation must be total and unrestricted. The gradual return to normality should have a positive economic impact, including on fuel prices, food security in various regions of the world and global supply chains," he emphasised.

The president of Portugal, António José Seguro, had also welcomed the agreement earlier today, hoping it would bring an immediate end to the conflict, including in Lebanon.

On Sunday, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that he had reached an agreement with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which had been closed, causing serious disruption, as around 20% of the world’s oil passes through this route.

In exchange for the reopening, the United States will lift the maritime blockade imposed on the entry and exit of ships in Iranian ports, according to Trump on the social media platform Truth Social.

This agreement will bring an end to the war that began on 28 February, following the offensive launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Although technical issues regarding Iran’s nuclear programme remain, the delegations will hold preparatory meetings throughout the week, ahead of the official signing scheduled for Friday, 19 June, in Switzerland.
