Lisbon, May 25, 2026 (Lusa) – A European project to combat disinformation and strengthen digital and media literacy launches this week in Portugal, featuring a seminar at Iscte (Portuguese public tertiary education institution) in Lisbon aimed at students, professionals, and the general community.
The EU-funded FAMA project – "Empowering Informed Citizens | Empowering European Democracies", brings together partners from Portugal, Italy, and Greece, including Iscte, the University of Palermo, and the University of Athens.
The initiative will hold its first event in Portugal on 27 and 28 May. The seminar, titled "Disinformation in the New Digital Era", will address media literacy challenges, the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the risks associated with information circulation in digital environments.
"Combating disinformation requires more than fact-checking," said project coordinator in Portugal Tiago Lapa, a researcher at CIES-Iscte (Sociology and social science research centre).
"It requires training critical, conscious citizens capable of understanding the invisible mechanisms that shape the information they consume," he said in a statement.
The project includes workshops, webinars, public debates, and a final conference, to be held in the three countries forming the consortium (Portugal, Italy, and Greece).
Alongside Iscte, the Portuguese consortium includes Aproximar - Cooperativa de Solidariedade Social. International partners include the Centro Sviluppo Creativo Danilo Dolci and the Athens Lifelong Learning Institute.
Scheduled to last 24 months, FAMA began in February 2026 and draws inspiration from the mythological figure of Fama, the goddess of rumours and the circulation of information.
The Lisbon seminar will feature researchers, journalists, and media specialists, including representatives from CENJOR (Portuguese Professional Training Centre for Journalists), the Público newspaper, Lusa news agency, and Obercom (Portuguese media research observatory).
