Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Over 290,000 still without electricity after storm Kristin

Lisbon, Jan. 30, 2026 (Lusa) - More than 290,000 customers were still without power at 6:30 a.m. on Friday morning in mainland Portugal, following damage caused by storm Kristin to the electricity grid on Wednesday, the electricity distribution company, E-Redes, said.

According to information sent to the Lusa news agency, the region of Leiria remained the most affected area, with around 221,000 customers affected.

In the region of Leiria, the most affected by the passage of storm Kristin, E-Redes activated a "state of emergency", installing 30 generators and mobilising around 200 more.

The passage of storm Kristin through mainland Portugal in the early hours of Wednesday morning left a trail of destruction, causing at least five deaths, according to Civil Protection, and leaving several people injured and homeless. The Marinha Grande municipal council has since reported another fatality in the district.

Fallen trees and structures, road and transport service disruptions, particularly railways, school closures, and power, water, and communication outages are the main material consequences of the storm.

Leiria, where the storm entered the country, Coimbra, and Santarém are the regions that have suffered the most damage.

The government declared a state of emergency between midnight on Wednesday and 11:59 p.m. on 1 February for around 60 areas, a number that may increase.
