Lisbon, Jan. 25, 2026 (Lusa) - At least ten flights to or from Portugal are being affected by the severe storm hitting the US and Canada on Sunday, according to figures compiled by Lusa based on information provided by ANA Aeroportos, the Portuguese airports managing company.
According to figures compiled by Lusa, based on information available on the ANA Aeroportos website between 10:40 and 23:55 on Sunday, eight flights departing from Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon are expected to be cancelled, including one to Philadelphia, one to New York (John F. Kennedy International Airport), one to Washington, one to Newark and another to Boston.
Three flights to Canada are also scheduled to be cancelled from the capital during the period analysed, two to Toronto and one to Montreal.
At Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, there are no scheduled departures to the US or Canada, but a flight from Newark in the US, which was scheduled to arrive at 13:10, is now scheduled for 15:35.
At Ponta Delgada Airport in the Azores, a flight to Boston this afternoon has been cancelled, with no arrivals scheduled from the US or Canada during the period analysed.
According to information available on the ANA Aeroportos website, there are no flights scheduled until the end of today departing from or arriving at Faro Airport and Funchal Airport to and from the US or Canada.
Lusa contacted ANA Aeroportos about possible impacts on operations following the storm affecting the US and Canada, but is still awaiting a response.
According to Lusa's analysis, most of the cancelled flights are TAP flights. In a publication on its website, the airline is warning passengers that operations "to/from the East Coast of the United States and Canada are being affected by adverse weather conditions".
When contacted by Lusa, an official source declined to give an estimate of the number of cancelled flights, referring to the information published on the airline's website and social media.
In this context, TAP states that passengers "with tickets to/from Boston, Chicago, New York (Newark and JFK airports), Washington, Montreal and Toronto, issued until 22 January, for flights between 23 and 26 January, can change their travel dates to flights between 27 January and 2 February 2026, in the same cabin class, without any penalty."
The severe storm is causing airlines to cancel and delay flights at some of the busiest airports in the US, according to the AP.
Snow, hail and freezing rain threatened nearly 180 million people — more than half the US population — in a belt stretching from the southern Rockies to New England, the National Weather Service said on Saturday night.
After sweeping through the south, forecasters said the storm was expected to move northeast, leaving about 30 to 60 centimetres of snow from Washington to New York and Boston.
More than 13,500 flights have been cancelled in the US since Saturday, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware, consulted by the Associated Press (AP). About 9,600 of these flights were scheduled for today.
