Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Project allows over 200 children to cycle to school in Matosinhos

Matosinhos, Portugal, Jan. 14, 2026 (Lusa) - The CicloExpresso project enabled 233 children in the municipality of Matosinhos to cycle to school in a "safe, organised and fun" way between September and December 2025, it was announced on Wednesday.

In a statement on its website, the municipality in the district of Porto points out that CicloExpresso has been operating "like a real train", with children, organised into groups, travelling along one of 37 predefined routes to school, accompanied by experienced monitors, with regular timetables and safe routes.

According to the local authority, this initiative aims to promote "not only active mobility, but also children's autonomy, socialising among peers and a reduction in car traffic in school zones".

CicloExpresso, developed by Matosinhos City Council in partnership with the Bicicultura Cooperative, currently has four active lines (São Mamede de Infesta, Leça da Palmeira, Padrão da Légua and Perafita) and involves 12 educational establishments in the municipality.

The local authority highlights that the initiative also has "environmental benefits, such as reducing pollutant emissions and road congestion" and a "direct impact on children's well-being, encouraging regular outdoor physical exercise and strengthening the sense of community among families, schools and monitors".

Registration for CicloExpresso remains open throughout the school year and is available through the project's official platform at https://cicloexpresso.pt/inscricoes/matosinhos.
