APS - Algeria elected vice chair of WIPO’s Copyright Committee

ALGIERS, 08 December 2025 (APS) - Algeria, represented by the Assistant Director General of the National Office for Copyright and Related Rights, Mehdi Delmi, was elected Vice Chair of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), for a two-year term (2026-2027), representing the African Group, at the conclusion of the committee's 47th session held in Geneva, Switzerland, according to a statement from the Office.

The Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights, the statement noted, is "one of the most important specialized intergovernmental bodies for establishing and developing international standards in copyright and related rights, particularly given currrent global digital and technological shifts."

This election represents "international recognition of Algeria’s leading role in advancing the copyright system at both regional and international levels," as well as recognition of "the technical and professional contributions of the National Office for Copyright and Related Rights within this multilateral platform."

In this regard, the Office extended its thanks to the African Group for supporting Algeria’s candidate, and to Algeria’s Permanent Mission in Geneva for its support and keenness to strengthen Algeria’s presence within WIPO.

The committee’s new leadership consists of Peter Labody (Hungary) as chair, Mohamed Mahdi Delmi (Algeria) as vice chair, and Martin Augusto Cortes (Argentina) also as vice chair.

In his new role, Delmi will work to "support the committee’s activities and facilitate dialogue among member states while building the necessary consensus," with a view to "achieving effective and balanced progress on copyright and related rights."
