Lisbon, Nov. 3, 2025 (Lusa) - The Deputy Minister for State Reform, Gonçalo Matias, announced on Monday the adoption of a national strategy for data centres centred on artificial intelligence (AI) and another for the sovereign cloud in Portugal.
"I'd like to announce a few measures here that I think are relevant," the first of which "is the adoption of a national data centre strategy, in particular data centres centred on artificial intelligence," he said at the parliamentary committees on State Reform and Local Power and on Budget, Finance and Public Administration, as part of the special assessment of the draft law on the State Budget for 2026 (OE2026).
"Portugal is today being sought after by several very important investments in the area of artificial intelligence “gigafactories”, and so we are looking at them in an integrated way, and through a national strategy with pre-licensed zones for data centres" and "we will also present a national strategy for the sovereign cloud and build a sovereign cloud infrastructure in Portugal, naturally in conjunction with other government areas", he concluded.
