Lisbon, Oct. 24, 2025 (Lusa) - Mozambique and Zambia signed an agreement on Thursday to establish a one-stop border post between the two countries, to make trade more flexible and to develop both countries, the Mozambican President announced.
‘We signed an agreement to build a one-stop border, the Cassacatiza border, between Zambia and Mozambique, to speed up trade between the two sister countries, because we believe that Zambia and Mozambique are two sister countries and we have to remain united, cohesive, to develop our two countries,’ said the President of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, in statements after signing the agreement.
The head of state was speaking in Zambia, a neighbouring country that borders Mozambique in the central province of Tete, after signing the agreement with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, as part of a visit to that country that ends on Friday.
Speaking after signing the agreement, Hakainde Hichilema expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Mozambique, especially in trade, and also mentioned agreements in energy and gas.
On 8 October, the Mozambican government announced that it will launch international public tenders to modernise and expand border posts in two central provinces, Manica (Machipanda border) and Tete (Cassacatiza border), under a public-private partnership.
The concession and upgrading, according to the cabinet spokesman, Inocêncio Impissa, will result in greater ‘fluidity’ in the transport of people and goods, increased revenue collection and activity in the corridors, improved institutional image and national security, as well as generating greater logistical competitiveness in the port corridors and stimulating economic development in the country's border provinces.
