Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Latest bird flu contamination found in Algarve

Lisbon, Oct. 23, 2025 (Lusa) - Bird flu has once again been detected in a wild bird in Portimão, Faro district, bringing the number of confirmed outbreaks this year to 29, according to the DGAV.

The H5N1 virus was detected in a white stork, according to the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary (DGAV).

On 18 July, an outbreak had already been confirmed in Portimão, in a yellow-legged gull.

The total number of outbreaks detected this year has now risen to 29.

At the beginning of the month, an outbreak had been confirmed in Aveiro and another in Madeira.

Transmission of the virus to humans occurs rarely and sporadic cases have been reported around the world. However, when it does occur, the infection can lead to a serious clinical condition.

The DGAV has been asking all bird keepers to comply with biosecurity measures and good production practices, avoiding contact between domestic and wild birds.

Any suspicion of bird flu infection should be reported to the DGAV.

The DGAV is a central service of the State's direct administration, with administrative autonomy.
