Lusa - Business News - Portugal: EDP electricity production up 14% until October

Lisbon, Oct. 17, 2025 (Lusa) - EDP's electricity generation increased by 14% in the first nine months of the year, with renewable energy accounting for around 90% of total generation.

In a statement sent to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), in which it reported on forecast operating data for the first nine months of the year, the group revealed that total production reached 48 TWh (Terawatt hours) by September, with hydro production in the Iberian Peninsula reaching 9.0 TWh, 1.9 TWh higher than expected.

In another statement sent to the CMVM, the subsidiary EDPR also informed the market that its production increased by 14% to 30 TWh.

Despite a slightly below-average first quarter, EDP now says that the first nine months of 2025 were marked by “strong water resources”, 38% above the historical average (33% year-on-year).

At the start of the year, reservoir levels stood at around 60% and rose to 68% at the end of September 2025, above the average of 52% for the period.

"This increase reflects the high levels of rainfall recorded during the first few months of the year, presenting comfortable reservoir levels to withstand the drier summer months," writes the company.

Wind and solar generation increased 14% to 31 TWh (including distributed solar in Europe and Brazil), "supported by the strong growth in solar installed capacity over the last 12 months, mainly in North America", says the company, adding that wind generation fell 1% year-on-year, mainly due to below-average wind resources in Europe, "partially offset by improved wind conditions in South America".

In the last 12 months, EDP added +3.4 GW of total capacity (+3.3 GW at EDP Renováveis level and the remainder referring to distributed solar power in Europe and Brazil).

The number of EDP electricity customers on the liberalised market in Portugal reached 3,429,000 in September 2025, with a stabilising trend compared to June, as a result of the "competitiveness of EDP's commercial offers, the growing adherence to differentiated services and the maintenance of high levels of quality in customer service", explains the company.

In the Iberian Peninsula, the electricity distributed increased by 3% year-on-year and customers connected to the grid increased by 1% year-on-year.

In Brazil, electricity distributed increased by 1% year-on-year, reflecting the 9M24 increase in electricity demand and supported by the 2% year-on-year increase in the number of customers connected to the grid.

Average electricity prices in Iberia increased by 24% year-on-year (from 52€/MWh to 65€/MWh), and thermal production increased by 3.7 TWh year-on-year.
