Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Work group set up to transpose gas, hydrogen directive

Lisbon, Oct. 8, 2025 (Lusa) - Portugal's government has set up a working group to transpose the European directive on common rules for the internal gas and hydrogen markets, approved as part of the Objective 55 package, according to an order published in the Diário da Republica on Wednesday.

Directive (EU) 2024/1788 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 on common rules for the internal markets in renewable gas, natural gas and hydrogen "aims to facilitate the integration of renewable and low-carbon gases, in particular hydrogen, into European energy systems, with a view to achieving the decarbonisation objectives set by the European Union," points out the order signed by the Minister for the Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho.

The working group will be responsible for preparing and presenting technical, legislative and regulatory proposals for the transposition of this directive. It will be made up of two representatives from the offices of the members of the Government responsible for the energy area, two representatives from the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG), one representative from the National Entity for the Energy Sector (ENSE) and also, as guests, up to two representatives from the Regulatory Entity for Energy Services (ERSE).

By 5 March next year, the group must submit proposals for legislative acts to be adopted to transpose the directive and, by 5 June, it must deliver a report and supporting documentation for the public consultation, if applicable.
