Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Government to modernise two border crossings

Maputo, Oct. 8, 2025 (Lusa) - The Mozambican government will launch international public tenders to modernise and expand border posts in two central provinces, under a public-private partnership, to provide greater "fluidity", according to a decision approved by the cabinet.

"The cabinet approved the resolution authorising the Ministry that oversees the transport and logistics area to go ahead with the launch of the international public tender for the concession of the integrated project to modernise and expand the Machipanda border crossing [in Manica province] under a public-private partnership," said the spokesman for that body, Inocêncio Impissa, after the weekly meeting in Maputo on Tuesday.

According to Impissa, the government has approved an integrated project to modernise and expand the Cassacatiza border crossing in Tete Province, along the same lines.

The concession and upgrading, according to the government official, will result in greater "fluidity" in the transport of people and goods, increased revenue collection and activity in the corridors, improved institutional image and national security, as well as generating greater logistical competitiveness in the port corridors and stimulating economic development in the country's border provinces.

For the government, these borders are "strategic" infrastructures for the success of the Beira and Nacala corridors, in Sofala and Nampula provinces respectively, "including for regional integration".

On 30 July, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi asked the National Migration Service (Senami) to combat illegal immigration using new technologies and ongoing training.

Given that Mozambique shares "extensive and porous borders" with six southern African countries - Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Eswatini - Chapo challenged the institution to reinforce actions to control entry and exit and to monitor the stay of foreign citizens in Mozambique, ensuring "strict compliance with legislation".
