Lisbon, July 31, 2025 (Lusa) - The inflation rate in Portugal rose to 2.6% in July, widening the gap in the price index compared to June in year-on-year terms, according to provisional estimates released on Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
According to information compiled by the institute, which is still subject to revision, the difference in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) between July this year and July 2024 was 2.6%.
The variation in June was 2.4%, which means that in July, the year-on-year difference was 0.2 percentage points above that observed in the previous month.
The underlying inflation indicator, which excludes unprocessed food and energy products because they are goods with more volatile prices, registered a variation of 2.4%, remaining at the same figure as the previous month.
The index for energy products registered a decrease of 1.1%, less intense than in June, when the decrease was 1.3%.
In contrast, the index for unprocessed food rose. In July, the year-on-year difference reached 6.2%, exceeding the year-on-year variation in June, which had been 4.7%.
In terms of monthly evolution (comparing the index value between June and July), INE data point to a decrease in the Consumer Price Index. The overall index fell by 0.4%. In June, it had risen by 0.1% compared to May.
The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which allows comparisons with other European Union (EU) countries, recorded a year-on-year change of 2.5%, higher than the difference observed in June, which was 2.1%.
In that month, the variation in the Portuguese index was slightly above the average inflation in the euro area, estimated by Eurostat at 2%.
However, the Portuguese rate was below the European Union figure, where the average was 2.3%, according to data from the European statistics service on 17 July.
The figures published today by INE are still provisional and were calculated based on the information the institute has gathered so far, and are subject to revision.
The final statistics will be released on 12 August.
