Maputo, July 3, 2025 (Lusa) - South Korea has provided more than $16.3 million (€13.8 million) since 2019 through the World Food Programme (WFP) for humanitarian assistance programmes in Mozambique, it was announced on Thursday.
"The Republic of Korea has been a long-standing partner of the WFP in Mozambique. Since 2019, it has contributed more than $16.3 million to support the country's most vulnerable populations with life-saving assistance and restore livelihoods," reads a statement from the United Nations agency.
According to the World Food Programme, Seoul has been a "key partner" in Mozambique, "providing critical support at a time marked by prolonged internal conflict, recurring climate shocks and growing funding gaps".
Since 2024, South Korea has disbursed a total of $7.6 million (€6.4 million) in "generous contributions" to improve food security for communities affected by multiple shocks in northern Mozambique, the WFP explains.
South Korea donated more than 5,000 tonnes of rice on Wednesday to support some 233,000 people affected by the armed rebellion since 2017, with attacks claimed by movements associated with the Islamic State extremist group, which have displaced more than one million people.
"We are fully aware that the communities in Cabo Delgado and the northern provinces continue to face serious difficulties caused by terrorism, armed conflict and recurring natural disasters," said South Korea's ambassador to Mozambique, Bok-won Kang, during the handover of the donation, which took place in Cabo Delgado.
The South Korean diplomat added that the donation of 5,000 tonnes of rice, made through the World Food Programme (WFP), also comes in response to the needs of communities affected by natural disasters that hit northern Mozambique during the last rainy season.
