Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Porto bus company relaunches tender for 30 new electric buses

Porto, June 5, 2025 (Lusa) - The Porto Public Transport Company (STCP) will launch another public tender to purchase 30 new electric buses for €12.9 million, after the procedure launched in January was unsuccessful, it announced on Thursday.

According to a statement sent to newsrooms today, STCP said that "the new tender follows the procedure launched in January this year, which was unsuccessful due to the absence of valid bids".

The price and "the same strategic objective" remain unchanged for the new tender: to "progressively eliminate combustion engine buses, contributing to the fleet renewal plan and the decarbonisation policy currently underway," according to the company.

The public tender for "the acquisition of 30 standard 100% electric buses and the respective charging station, in an investment of €12,900,000' was launched today.

Also at stake is the installation of an Electric Charging Station, with 15 double charging points, which "will be installed at the Via Norte Collection Station, where the new vehicles in the STCP fleet will be allocated".

"The arrival of the 30 new STCP electric buses — standard 12-metre vehicles with a minimum range of 320 km — is scheduled for the end of the first quarter of 2026. The new 30 buses will join the 68 electric buses already in circulation and the 28 (20 standard and 8 midis) that will arrive in 2025," the company added.

According to the transport company chaired by Cristina Pimentel, "in 2026, STCP will have a total of 126 fully electric vehicles in circulation", with the fleet currently consisting of "444 vehicles, of which 75% are powered by natural gas, 15% are emission-free and the remaining 10% use diesel".

Proposals must be submitted directly on the electronic platform by 5 p.m. on 3 July.

STCP provides public road passenger transport in the AMP, on an exclusive basis within the limits of the municipality of Porto, and under a general concession in the neighbouring municipalities of Gondomar, Matosinhos, Maia, Valongo and Vila Nova de Gaia.

The municipality of Porto is the majority shareholder of the intermunicipal company (53.69%), with the remaining shares divided between the other five municipalities where STCP operates, with 12.04% of the capital belonging to Vila Nova de Gaia, 11.98% to Matosinhos, 9.61% to Maia, 7.28% to Gondomar and 5.40% to Valongo.
