Vila Real de Santo António, Portugal, May 8, 2025 (Lusa) - The Maritime Police (PM) seized 876 kilograms of narcotics at sea off the Algarve coast, near Vila Real de Santo António, the police force said on Thursday.
The seizure of the drugs was the result of a maritime patrol and surveillance operation south of the Guadiana river estuary, in Portuguese territorial waters, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) said in a statement.
The narcotic product was packed in 21 bales, totalling around 876 kilograms.
"During the collection of the material, which was heading for Spanish territorial waters, the Spanish authorities were immediately contacted to proceed with its collection," the AMN said.
The AMN statement added that the Local Command of the Maritime Police of Vila Real de Santo António recorded the incident and that the seized narcotic product will be handed over to the Judicial Police.
