Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Power utilities see stocks rise in wake of Monday's blackout

Lisbon, April 29, 2025 (Lusa) - The Lisbon stock market closed higher on Tuesday, with the PSI rising 1.37% to 6,967.27 points, boosted by gains of more than 2% from EDP and REN, following the blackout that affected the country.

Of the 15 listed companies that make up the index, all closed higher, with the exception of Nos, which fell 0.41% to €3.66.

Among the gainers were REN, which rose 2.64% to €2.91, and EDP, which added 2.34% to €3.45, following a generalised power cut that affected Portugal and Spain from 11.30 a.m. on Monday.

Also noteworthy were Mota-Engil, which rose 2.80% to €3.53, BCP, which rose 2.54% to €0.57 and EDP Renováveis, which rose 1.18% to €8.14.

Also up by more than 1% in today's session were CTT, Semapa, Navigator and Sonae.

In Europe, the session was mixed, with Madrid dropping 0.67% to 13,366.30 points and Paris falling 0.24% to 7,555.87 points, while Frankfurt added 0.80% to 22,449.71 points and London 0.61% to 8,468.75 points.

The power failure affected the Iberian Peninsula and part of France for more than 10 hours.

Closed airports, congestion in transport and traffic in major cities and fuel shortages were some of the consequences of the ‘blackout’.

The electricity distribution network operator E-Redes said this morning that the service had been fully restored and normalised.
