Lusa - Business News - Timor-Leste: PM on visit to China's Hunan province

Dili, April 14, 2025 (Lusa) — The Timor-Leste government said on Monday that Timor-Leste's prime minister, Xanana Gusmão, travelled on Sunday to Huan province in China to strengthen bilateral cooperation established more than 10 years ago with the municipality of Manatuto.

During the visit, which ends on Thursday, Xanana Gusmão will present the Hunan authorities with several cooperation projects for various municipalities in Timor-Leste, including in the areas of agriculture, livestock and fisheries.

The aim is to establish new partnerships with Hunan, according to information provided by the Timorese government on its official website.

On Sunday, the Timorese prime minister visited the Hunan Institute of Geology to explore opportunities for scientific and technical cooperation, and is also scheduled to visit the Industrial Park, the International Fireworks Exhibition Centre and a company's smart industrial city by Thursday.

"These visits are intended to identify opportunities for investment and knowledge transfer to Timor-Leste," the government said.

The cooperation relationship between Timor-Leste and Hunan province has been intensifying over the last 11 years and covers the tourism, cultural, education, agriculture and aquaculture sectors, mainly with Manatuto, east of Dili, and the municipality where Xanana Gusmão was born.

The Timorese prime minister travelled accompanied by the ministers of State Administration, Tomás Cabral, Strategic Planning, Gastão Francisco de Sousa, and the presidents of the municipal authorities of Baucau, Ainaro, Manatuto, Covalima and Manufahi.
