More than twenty Venezuelan media, a dozen from the Dominican Republic and the main Spanish newspapers reflect the successful broadcasting and publishing of the interview conducted by the Spanish news agency EFE with the Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia.
In the interview, held at the Agency's headquarters in Madrid, González Urrutia stated that he is “morally prepared” for his eventual arrest if he returns to Caracas to assume the Presidency and bets on a peaceful transition in which Chavism can find a space and Nicolás Maduro himself can continue in the country.
Less than 50 days before the date foreseen for the inauguration of the next president of Venezuela, January 10, González Urrutia confirmed his intention to travel to Caracas to take office with the endorsement of the 7.3 million votes that, he assured, he won in the elections of last July 28, against the little more than 3 million that he attributes to Maduro.
In his first interview granted to a Spanish media, Gonzalez Urrutia, who arrived in Madrid in September to request political asylum after denouncing electoral fraud in his country, considers himself “the candidate who won the victory” and who “should take possession of the Presidency”. “For that we are prepared and working”, he said.
Related to the wide dissemination of the interview, newspapers such as El País, El Mundo and ABC, among others, echoed it in Spain.
Among the 22 media that published the information in Venezuela were El Nacional, El Diario.com, Caraotadigital.com, Lapatilla.com, Talcualdigital.com, acn.com, tenemosnoticias.com and diariodelosandes.com, among many others. Meanwhile, in the Dominican Republic, among the eleven media outlets that published EFE's information are El Nacional, El Nuevo Diario, El Día, Ahora Mismo, and Notiultimas.com. The interview with Edmundo González Urrutia, conducted by EFE's president, Miguel Ángel Oliver, was also widely reported in the Colombian media, including Caracol TV, El Espectador, El Tiempo and Revista Alternativa.
Uruguay, Peru, Cuba, Argentina and Mexico were other countries where the information was published.
In the interview to EFE, Gonzalez Urrutia also indicated that in his eventual administration as president he will advocate for “negotiations for an orderly transition”, such as the release of political prisoners, which he estimates at more than 2,000.
“There will be prior negotiations that will allow, God willing, an orderly transition. There could be a coexistence within the Venezuelan soil”, he said.
He also referred to Spain where he said he feels “at home” and avoided entering into national political issues, but stressed that in his conversations with the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, he has found “positive expressions of affection and support”.
“At no time do I have anything to complain about what has been done so far,” he assured. Finally, Gonzalez Urrutia said he does not fear for his personal safety, nor for that of his family in Caracas: “When I negotiated my departure to Spain there was an agreement of some guarantees”.
