Lusa - Business News - Angola: The world's future lies in Africa - US president

Luanda, Dec. 3, 2024 (Lusa) - US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that the future of the world lies in Angola and Africa and that the United States was fully committed to the continent.

Joe Biden made the statements today at a meeting with his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, declaring himself ‘proud’ to be the first President of the United States of America (USA) to visit Angola and for what they have done together to ‘transform the partnership’.

‘There's a lot we can do, there's a lot we can do. The results so far speak for themselves,’ Biden told João Lourenço, thanking him for his hospitality.

Joe Biden discussed US investments in Angola, from the Lobito corridor to solar energy projects and internet and telecommunications infrastructure.

He also spoke about investments to increase agricultural production, ‘so that Angola can feed itself’ and the rest of the world, considering the sector to be ‘a good opportunity’ for the Angolan economy.

The United States, he said, is ‘totally with Africa’ and with Angola, pointing out that his administration has already invested $3 billion (around €2.85 billion at the current price) in Angola so far.

‘The future of the world is here, in Africa, in Angola,’ he emphasised, saying that it was also part of his priorities in Angola to discuss how to say democracy for the people, highlighting João Lourenço's commitment in this area.

Joe Biden said that the United States does not have all the answers because it is bigger or stronger, but it is ready to listen to Angola's needs, particularly regarding international funding.

‘And I say from the bottom of my heart, the world's future is in Africa,’ he declared, considering that in 20 years it will be the largest economy in the world.

‘The more successful you are, the more successful we will be and the more successful the world will be,’ the US head of state concluded. Joe Biden, who arrived in Luanda at the end of the day on Monday on the first visit by a US head of state to the country, will today, as well as meeting his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, give a speech at the Slavery Museum.

The outgoing President of the United States will continue on Wednesday to Lobito. This city will host an international summit on the Lobito Corridor, an infrastructure with significant investment from the United States and the European Union, which will connect the Angolan city's port to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia in a project that will allow minerals and other resources to flow across the Atlantic.
