Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Quarter of population aged 15-35 out of work, school, training - INE

Praia, Oct. 21, 2024 (Lusa) - The Cabo Verdean National Statistics Institute (INE) estimates that a quarter of the population aged between 15 and 35 was out of work and out of education or training in the second quarter of the year.

"The Continuous Multiobjective Inquiry for the second quarter of 2024 made it possible to estimate that 41,852 young people aged 15 to 35 were out of work and out of education or training, representing 24.5% of all young people in this age group," INE announced on Monday in a press release.

The female sex is the most disadvantaged: when only women are surveyed, the percentage rises to 27.4%, compared to 21.8% among men.

Rural areas are also the most disadvantaged, with the percentage jumping to 29% of the population in these conditions, compared to 20.9% in urban areas.

The INE study also analysed the 15 to 24 age group, an indicator followed under target number eight of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), created by the United Nations, which promotes decent work and economic growth.

In this case, the proportion of young people out of work and out of education or training "was 23%, equivalent to 18,928 young people" - higher among women (23.9%) than men (22.2%).

The Continuous Multiobjective Survey (IMC) is an inquiry whose main objectives are to collect demographic, social and economic information on the general public, as well as on the living conditions of households.

Since 2011, the IMC has been carried out in the fourth quarter of each year, with collection during the months of November and December, with the exception of 2019 and 2024: this year, a first collection has already been carried out in the 2nd quarter and the second collection will be carried out in the 4th quarter.
