Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Lisbon stock market higher, reversing opening losses; Galp up 1.4%

Lisbon, Oct. 21, 2024 (Lusa) - The Lisbon stock market reversed its opening trend on Monday morning and was traded higher, with shares in Galp Energia rising 1.39% to €16.77 and Ibersol down 2.20% to €7.10.

At around 9.05am in Lisbon, the benchmark PSI (Portugal Stock Index) advanced 0.25% to 6,690.72 points, with six shares rising, seven falling and three remaining unchanged (NOS at €3.63, REN at €2.39 and Semapa at €14.82).

Galp's shares were followed by Jerónimo Martins, Sonae and EDP Renováveis, which rose 1.06% to €17.13, 0.64% to €0.94 and 0.57% to €14.03.

Corticeira Amorim and Altri shares rose 0.34% to €8.90 and 0.19% to €5.14.

In the opposite direction, after Ibersol's shares, Greenvolt, CTT and BCP fell the most, dropping 0.84% to €8.26, 0.47% to €4.26 and 0.44% to €0.43.

More moderately, shares in Navigator, Mota-Engil and EDP fell 0.38% to €3.67, 0.23% to €2.58 and 0.03% to €3.90.

The main European stock markets were mixed and cautious today, with an eye on the German producer price index.

Investors started the week cautiously, after stock markets rose on Friday following the European Central Bank's rate cut and the all-time share index highs on Wall Street.

The ECB cut its benchmark rates by a quarter of a point for the third time this year, the second in a row, in the face of inflation that it considers to be "on track" and of weaker-than-expected economic activity.

Last Friday, on Wall Street, the Dow Jones closed at a record high, in what was the sixth consecutive week of gains.

Despite this, in Asia, the main markets saw moderate movements, with Tokyo's Nikkei closing practically unchanged, with a slight fall of 0.07%.

The Shanghai Stock Exchange, meanwhile, advanced 0.20% on a day when the People's Bank of China cut interest rates by 25 basis points, a measure that had already been anticipated and had almost no impact on the market, according to experts.

In other markets, gold, which reached new all-time highs this morning, above $2,732, has lost some steam at this hour and is up 0.36% to $2,730.8.

A barrel of Brent crude oil for December delivery opened higher on Monday, at $73.45 on London's Intercontinental Exchange Futures (ICE), compared to $73.06 on Friday.

On the foreign exchange market, the euro opened weaker at $1.0854 on the Frankfurt exchange, compared to $1.0867 on Friday.
