Lisbon, Sept. 12, 2024 (Lusa) - Portugal's largest trade union confederation, the CGTP-IN, has called for across-the-board salary increases of at least 15% for all workers from January 2025, with the lowest monthly salaries to rise by at least €150, it was announced on Thursday.
The CGTP is calling for "an increase in salaries for all workers of at least 15%, not less than 150 euros" in order to "restore purchasing power, allow those who want to live and work here to stay in the country and improve living conditions," according to the proposal contained in the confederation's policy demands for 2025, approved on Thursday by its National Council.
The group argues that "a general and significant increase in salaries is essential for boosting the economy" and also "has a positive impact on improving social security accounts and would accommodate the extraordinary increase in pensions," as well as that it is "necessary" to deal with the "brutal increase in the cost of living" that has taken place over the "last two years."
As for the statutory national minimum salary, the CGTP advocates an increase from the current €820 a month to €1,000 from January, in order to guarantee "a dignified life".
