TIRANA, Sept. 14 /ATA/ – The 21st edition of the International Human Rights Film Festival, organised by the Marubi Film and Multimedia Academy, is being held in Tirana from September 14 to 19.
Under the theme “War, peacemaking, the rule of law and remembrance of victims,” the six-day festival will screen films exploring the complex histories of current conflicts, as well as archival and collective memories and the experiences of victims and the missing people.
“A series of ethical and moral principles are colliding with interests driven by the exploitation of natural and human resources, in an isomorphic pattern throughout the relentless course of human history,”
said Executive Director Kujtim Çashku.
The programme features mainly European films, reflecting what Çashku described as a continent once again at war and facing risks to its existence and to the achievements made in the decades since World War Two.
The films also explore the strategic interests of Russia, NATO and China, while changing relations between Europe and the United States under President Donald Trump are examined in the film “Defending Europe.”
Another theme is the transfer of power to artificial intelligence as a form of potentially autonomous power beyond human control, which the festival says could transform social structures and the nature of human relationships.
The programme includes films examining the role of the media and the degree of propaganda carried by journalism itself, as well as the role of police in maintaining order during protests and in a democracy.
The Kosovo war is also addressed through Blerta Basholli’s film “Dua.”
The festival opens on Monday evening at 7 p.m. with “SUNDAYS”, a 2025 Spanish-French fiction film running 117 minutes and winner of four Goya Awards.
During the festival, screenings will also be held at the Marubi Film and Multimedia Academy, the School of Magistrates, the Security Academy and the Authority for Information on Former State Security Files. The venues will host thematic films addressing different aspects of society and human rights.
