Lisbon, Sept. 3, 2024 (Lusa) - Rede Expressos, together with operators and partners, will invest €15 million in the purchase of 48 new buses, the national express bus network announced on Tuesday.
This investment will make it possible to reduce the average age of the fleet to less than five years, compared to the current six years, Rede Expressos said in a statement.
The new buses, which will start running in 2025, are designed to set efficiency standards (with lower CO2 emissions), due to the Euro 6 engines that use AdBlue, ‘which contribute to improving air quality and comply with the strictest emissions standards’.
In addition, the new buses will be equipped with 5G Wi-Fi, sockets for charging mobile devices and more comfortable seats.
Quoted in the statement, the general director of Rede Expressos, Carlos Oliveira, said that the company is not only determined to ‘lead the transition’ to ‘greener and more efficient’ road transport, but also wants to respond to passengers who are ‘increasingly concerned about ecological practices in their travel choices’.
Rede Expressos is a national express bus network in Portugal, which was created in 1995 and since then has provided connections to more than 300 destinations in the country and abroad.
In 2023, the number of passengers transported increased by 22%, to almost 11 million, and travelled 14% more kilometres, to around 71 million kilometres.
