Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Unemployment rate falls to 6.2% in July - official

Lisbon, Aug. 29, 2024 (Lusa) - Provisional data released today by Statistics Portugal (INE) show that the unemployment rate fell to 6.2% in July, 0.2 percentage points lower than in June and equal to the same month in 2023.

"The unemployment rate stood at 6.2%, lower than the previous month and three months earlier (0.2 percentage points in both) and the same as a year earlier," the INE said in its “Monthly Employment and Unemployment Estimates”.

According to the statistical institute, the unemployed population (331,800) "decreased concerning the three comparison periods: 3.7%, 4.6% and 0.6%, respectively" in July.

INE also released the final employment and unemployment estimates for June, revising the unemployment rate for that month downwards to 6.4% (6.7% in the provisional estimates), the same as in May, 0.1 percentage points lower than in March 2024 and 0.1 percentage points higher than in June 2023.

In July, the labour force (5,373,000) decreased compared to June (0.4%) and April 2024 (0.7%), but increased compared to July 2023 (0.5%).

The employed population (5,041,200) fell compared to the previous month (0.1%) and three months earlier (0.5%) and rose compared to a year earlier (0.5%).

The inactive population (2,552,900) increased over the three comparison periods: 1.1%, 2.5% and 1.6%, respectively.

In July, the labour underutilisation rate stood at 10.9%, lower than in June 2024 (0.1 percentage points), April of the same year (0.1 percentage points) and July 2023 (0.6 percentage points).

According to the final estimates for June, the employed population (5,048.000) fell compared to May (0.5%) and March 2024 (0.4%) and rose compared to June 2023 (0.8%), while the unemployed population (344.500) fell 0.7% compared to the previous month and 2.6% compared to three months earlier, having risen 2.7% compared to the same month last year.

The labour force (5,392,500 people) decreased compared to the previous month (0.5%) and three months earlier (0.6%), having increased compared to a year earlier (0.9%). The inactive population (2,525,400) increased compared to all comparison periods: 1.4%, 2.0%, and 0.6%, respectively.

In June, the labour underutilisation rate stood at 11.0%, as in the previous month, but was 0.2 percentage points lower than three months earlier and 0.6 percentage points lower than a year earlier.
