Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Government signs deals with 14 local authorities for 4,130 houses

Lisbon, July 22, 2024 (Lusa) - Portugal's government signed agreements worth €400 million on Monday with the local authorities of 14 municipalities in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley to build and rehabilitate 4,130 homes for needy families.

Almada, Alcochete, Cascais, Lisboa, Loures, Mafra, Moita, Odivelas, Oeiras, Seixal, Sesimbra, Setúbal, Sintra and Vila Franca de Xira signed agreements and terms of responsibility and acceptance today at the prime minister's official residence in Lisbon, under the Support Programme for Access to Housing, financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR, European funds).

At the same ceremony, agreements were also signed with the municipalities of Fafe, Guimarães, Lamego and Matosinhos, increasing the number of homes in the northern region under the same measure to 1,450.

Under the agreements with these four municipalities, 355 homes will be built and rehabilitated, for a total investment of €54 million.

According to information provided by the government, more than 300 contracts and terms of responsibility have already been signed with local councils for the construction and rehabilitation of homes, totalling around €720 million.

The terms of responsibility allow local councils to proceed with the construction or rehabilitation of buildings for decent housing for the most vulnerable families, with the approval of applications by the Housing and Rehabilitation Institute (IHRU)  being left to a later stage.

The municipalities began signing the terms of responsibility and acceptance in June, as part of the government's housing strategy under the Construir Portugal programme. Agreements have already been signed with around a hundred municipalities from the north to the south of the country.
