Lisbon, July 19, 2024 (Lusa) - The Lisbon city council executive on Friday approved a proposal to increase the tourist tax on overnight stays from €2 per guest per night to €4, following a period of public consultation, and with the declared intention that the change will come into force "from 1 September."
In a private meeting of the municipal executive, the proposal by the right-of-centre PSD/CDS-PP coalition, which must still be submitted to the municipal assembly, was approved with the Communist Party (PCP) voting against and the remaining votes in favour, namely the proponents, the Socialist Party (PS), Livre, Citizens for Lisbon (elected on the PS/Livre coalition ticket) and the Left Bloc (BE), a source from the municipality told Lusa.
The proposal, which was submitted for public consultation for a period of 30 days, remains unchanged in terms of the idea of increasing the tourist tax on overnight stays to €4 per night.
The document also includes an update to the tourist tax for arrivals by sea, from €1 per passenger to €2, although the amount that is now being proposed is the one that began to be applied this year, when this tax began to be levied on cruise passengers.
According to the proposal to which Lusa has had access, the council wants "the Municipal Tourist Tax for Overnight stays to come into force on 1 September and the Municipal Tourist Tax for Arrivals by Sea on the day following the publication of the amendment to the Regulations in the Diário da República."
On 17 April, the municipal executive approved the PSD/CDS-PP proposal to submit these changes to public consultation, with the PCP abstaining and the remaining executive members voting in favour.
