Lusa - Business News - Portugal: VW Autoeuropa unit 'being considered' for electric car - works council

Palmela, Portugal, 08 Jul 2024 (Lusa) - The management of Germany's Volkswagen group has assured the works council at Autoeuropa, at Palmela, in Setúbal district, south of Lisbon, that plant "is being considered to receive [the task of assembling] an electric car," the coordinator of that representative body has told Lusa.

According to Rogério Nogueira, the information was passed on by the group's management during meetings of the global committee of VW works councils, held on 27 and 28 June in Wolfsburg, Germany, and a final decision is expected to be made known in the coming months.

According to Nogueira, the revelation from the VW management came after the Autoeuropa works council pressed on the allocation of work on a new model for Palmela unit, to replace the new T-Roc from 2028, when the model is due to be phased out.

"We are, of course, very pleased that Autoeuropa is in a position to receive yet another model for production, and this time an electric one," said Nogueira. "As everyone knows, a major investment is being made for the future, to prepare the plant to be able to produce electric cars as well. The works council will continue to press for this possibility to become a certainty."
