NNA - Lebanese Social Affairs Minister Hanin El Sayed said Italy can play an active role in Lebanon’s recovery, particularly by supporting displaced families, helping them restore their livelihoods and ensuring their dignity.
Speaking at a gathering hosted by the Lebanese Embassy in Rome during her visit to Italy, El Sayed stressed the importance of Italian and international support for Lebanon. The event coincided with the launch of the international humanitarian coalition "Rooted for Lebanon."
The minister said government and international assistance, including support from Italy and the European Union, remains a key part of the humanitarian response, while the new coalition seeks to mobilize additional private-sector resources and channel them directly to vulnerable families.
According to El Sayed, the initiative has raised around $338,000 in private donations since its launch in May. The funds will be transferred directly to verified beneficiary families through a digital system, allowing them to receive and withdraw the assistance through local money-transfer companies.
The program focuses particularly on older people, persons with disabilities, families with children and women-headed households, providing displaced families with flexible assistance that they can use according to their priorities, including food, medicine and education.
Lebanese Ambassador to Italy Carla Jazzar said the Lebanese community in Italy can play an important role in supporting Lebanon’s recovery, stressing that assistance is not limited to financial contributions but also reflects continued ties with the country.
Jazzar described the "Rooted for Lebanon" campaign as part of broader efforts to help displaced families and local communities move from emergency response toward recovery and rebuilding.
Italy announces €10 million in humanitarian assistance
Italy announced in March a €10 million humanitarian contribution to help alleviate the impact of the crisis in Lebanon and address urgent needs in communities affected by the conflict, alongside 30 tonnes of in-kind humanitarian assistance for displaced people.
The package includes €2 million for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Humanitarian Fund, €2 million for the Red Cross and €6 million for NGOs operating in Lebanon, in addition to medicines, food and personal hygiene supplies.
The Italian Foreign Ministry said the contribution reflects Italy’s solidarity with Lebanon and its people and its commitment to working closely with Lebanese authorities and the United Nations to ensure humanitarian assistance reaches those most in need.
