Dili, Oct. 5, 2026 (Lusa) - The Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Xanana Gusmão, is in Thailand, where he will make an official visit at the end of the week, following his participation in a forum on technology for the petrochemical industry, the Timorese Government has announced.

The official visit, the first by a Timorese prime minister in the last 13 years, will take place between Thursday and Friday.

Xanana Gusmão and his Thai counterpart, Anutin Charnvirakul, will meet on Thursday, on which agreements are also due to be signed.

Topics for discussion will include development cooperation in the sectors of defence and security, trade, investment, food security, energy, tourism and cooperation within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The two countries have enjoyed cooperative relations since Thailand's participation in the peacekeeping mission in Timor-Leste, having officially established diplomatic relations in 2002.

Prior to the official visit, the Timorese leader will take part in a forum on technology for the petrochemical industry, to be held in Bangkok on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The programme for the visit also includes a visit to the city of Nonthanuri and the Thai Environment Institute, as well as meetings with representatives of the Thai private sector «focused on opportunities for economic cooperation and investment», the Government emphasises.
