Dili, Sept. 11, 2026 (Lusa) - The Timorese President, José Ramos-Horta, on Friday called for a strengthening of the economic partnership with China, describing the country as a «vital partner».

«As Timor-Leste grows, our economic partnership must also evolve. Within the framework of our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, China remains a vital partner. 

In the first half of 2026 alone, China supplied imports worth $72 million [around €62 million]», said José Ramos-Horta, in a speech delivered to mark that country's national day.

According to the Timorese Head of State, Timor-Leste's aim is to «build a balanced and mutually beneficial economic relationship».

«We intend to increase exports of coffee, agricultural produce and fisheries products from Timor-Leste to Chinese markets,» he said, emphasising that the benefits of Chinese tariffs could be a «transformative path for Timorese businesses».

«We welcome foreign direct investment, such as the framework agreement with the Caizi Group for potential investments in the tourism, housing, agriculture and industry sectors,» the President emphasised.

In his speech, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate also highlighted Chinese cooperation with Timor-Leste in areas such as education and vocational training, defence and security, and infrastructure, amongst others.

«Whilst we do not seek to replicate its path entirely, China's success demonstrates that a long-term vision and strategic planning can achieve rapid modernisation,» he said.

At the start of his speech, the Timorese President reaffirmed his commitment to the One-China Policy.

«We recognise that there is only one China, that the mainland government is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory,» stated José Ramos-Horta.
