Lisbon, Sept. 2, 2026 (Lusa) - Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has expressed Portugal's «full solidarity» with Germany following the hybrid attack in Leipzig in August, for which the German government has held Russia responsible.

«We express our full solidarity with Germany in the face of the Russian hybrid attack in Leipzig. The unity of all the Allies is an essential pillar of our collective security, and we will remain firm in its defence, just as we will continue to denounce those who seek to divide us,» wrote Luís Montenegro on social media platform X.

«Our resolve to defend Ukraine remains firm. We stand united with Germany and our other allies in support of the values of peace, security and freedom,» added the head of the PSD/CDS-PP government.

The German government has held Russia responsible for the drone incidents at Leipzig Airport in August and announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian cultural centre in Berlin.

Following this stance taken on Tuesday, the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, and the Secretary-General of NATO, expressed their «full solidarity» with Germany in messages posted on social media.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said she had spoken this morning with the German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz.

«I said that the European Union stands in full solidarity with Germany in the face of this attack carried out by Russia,» said von der Leyen.

The President of the European Commission stated that the European Union would remain «united, despite these serious and increasingly intense acts», and welcomed the «firm measures» taken by the German government in response to the incident.

For his part, Mark Rutte also indicated that he had spoken with the German Chancellor, to whom he conveyed NATO's «full solidarity».

«The evidence is clear. And I welcome the measures announced by Germany in response,» said the NATO Secretary-General.

The President of the European Council, António Costa, also expressed «total solidarity with Germany» and condemned «in the strongest possible terms the attempted drone attack carried out by Russia».

«Russia must end its war of aggression against Ukraine and choose de-escalation,» argued António Costa, stating that «the EU remains strong and united, and Russia will not prevail.» IEL/ADB // ADB.
