Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Novo Banco profits fall almost 16% to €367M in H1

Lisbon, Aug. 4, 2026 (Lusa) - Novo Banco posted a profit of €367.2 million in the first six months of the year, a fall of 15.6% compared with the same period in 2025, it announced on Tuesday.

Between January and June, «net profit stood at €367.2 million», showing a 15.6% reduction compared with the same period last year, which «reflects the increase in extraordinary costs associated with the sale of the bank [to the French group BPCE], as well as a higher effective tax rate», the bank stated in a press release.

Operating profit, meanwhile, fell by 13.1% to €466.7 million.

Operating costs amounted to €292 million, an increase of 11.8% compared with the same period last year.

In the first half of the year, net banking income fell by 5% to €758.7 million.

Profit before tax totalled €480.9 million, down 8.6%.

Net interest income totalled €563.3 million, an increase of €4.5 million compared with the first half of 2025.

The average balance of customer deposits rose by 6.1% during this period to €32,800 million.

«The results reflect Novo Banco's strong commercial momentum and ability to deliver […]. This half-year also marks the beginning of a new chapter in the bank's history, with its integration into Groupe BPCE,» noted the bank's chief executive, Mark Bourke, as quoted in the same press release.

As at 30 June, the Novo Banco group had 4,158 employees, an increase of 77 compared with the end of 2025.

The number of branches, meanwhile, stood at 302, an increase of 13, which was attributed to the «conversion of former branch extensions into full-service branches».

In the first half of the year, the group recorded net impairment losses of -€14.1 million, a decrease of €25.3 million compared with the first half of 2025.

Loans to customers (gross) amounted to €32,700 million, up 5.7%.

Of this figure, 57% was granted to businesses, 35% corresponded to mortgage loans and 8% to consumer credit and other loans.

The sale of Novo Banco to the French group BPCE for €6.7 billion was completed on 30 April.

Following the sale, the Portuguese State received €1.673 billion, of which €906 million went to the Resolution Fund and €766 million to the Treasury and Finance Authority.

In March, the newspaper *Eco* reported that Novo Banco employees were to receive, in May, a bonus equivalent to two months' salary as a result of the sale; this bonus could have amounted to €25 million, according to statements made to the press by the staff committee.
