Odemira, Portugal, July 22, 2026 (Lusa) - Portuguese energy group Galp is considering the development of a wind farm comprising around 22 wind turbines in the districts of Ourique and Odemira, in the region of Beja, with an approximate capacity of 158 megawatts, the company explained on Wednesday.

In response to written questions from the Lusa news agency, Galp clarified that the so-called Mira Wind Project is at an early stage of development.

The project «consists of combining wind power with a solar farm in Ourique», it added.

According to Galp, in June 2026, it submitted a Scope Definition Proposal (PDA) to the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), which constitutes the first stage of the environmental impact assessment process.

This proposal is intended to «gather input from the relevant authorities on the issues to be studied and the methodologies to be used in the future Environmental Impact Study (EIS)», it added.

According to the company, the EIS will only be carried out once this stage has been completed; it will assess the «potential impacts of the project, the alternatives considered» and «the measures to be implemented to eliminate environmental risks».

In this context, it emphasised that «the final configuration» of the project, the «number of wind turbines or the exact location» of some of the structures «may still be adjusted depending on the results of the technical and environmental studies to be carried out».

«In a preliminary configuration, the project envisages up to 22 wind turbines, corresponding to an installed capacity of around 158 MW [megawatts]».

According to Galp, construction of this wind farm is not expected to begin «before 2029», taking into account the various licensing and development phases still underway.

The project envisages the «integration of a solar power plant currently under development in the Ourique region», combining «solar and wind [energy] generation in the same area».

In this way, the company will ensure «a more efficient use of existing electrical infrastructure».

However, Galp has not, at this stage, disclosed the estimated investment costs, explaining that the final configuration of the project has not yet been defined.

It also clarified that the Mira Project «is entirely distinct from the Cachenas project», which covered four parishes in the municipalities of Odemira (Beja), Santiago do Cacém and Sines, in the district of Setúbal, and has since been cancelled.

This new project «is not a consequence of the cancellation» of the Cachenas Wind Farm, it assured.

According to the company, the Cachenas project was «linked to the direct supply of renewable energy to the hydrogen electrolyser located at the Sines Refinery».

The Mira Wind Project, on the other hand, «was conceived as a hybrid project aimed at feeding energy into the National Electricity Grid», it maintained.

«These are projects with distinct objectives, frameworks and development models», the company assured, noting that the Mira Project has been «under consideration for several years» and «its development has proceeded independently of the progress» of the Cachenas wind farm.

The company also revealed that it has been establishing contacts to «present the project and gather feedback» from the public, notably through the parish councils, with which it has established «a channel for dialogue», and with the municipal councils of Odemira and Ourique.
