Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Absolute unity between NATO allies, no disputes during summit - PM

Ankara, July 8, 2026 (Lusa) - Portugal's prime minister stated on Wednesday that there is “absolute unity” within NATO regarding the Alliance’s functioning and objectives, emphasising that there had been “no quarrel” or disagreement during the leaders’ summit, in a reference to Trump.

At a press conference following the NATO summit of heads of state and government in Ankara, Luís Montenegro stated that, during the meeting, “unity across the entire Alliance” and the “strength of the transatlantic bond” had been confirmed.

“Around the table there was complete agreement and a shared perspective on the issues under discussion. From everyone, without exception. There was no quarrel, nor any controversy, in the statements made by all the allies,” he assured.

The prime minister emphasised that, although there were, on the sidelines, “some disturbances that occur and which often divert attention from what is essential”, the “unity around the objectives and operating principles of the Atlantic Alliance was absolute”.

“I will repeat this, because that is exactly how it was: they were absolute. There was not a single point of disagreement regarding the objectives of aligning European investment with that of the United States, in terms of capabilities, the major objectives of deterrence, the promotion of peace, and the conditions that provide us with the security to guarantee citizens’ fundamental rights,” he stated.

He also noted that, during the summit, all allies reaffirmed their support for Ukraine, “whose struggle is absolutely crucial” to the Alliance’s security and to the preservation of its “democratic values”.

As part of this support for Kyiv, Luís Montenegro noted that Portugal has committed to “renewing in 2026 the military and financial support” it provided in 2024 and 2025, but will increase its contribution to NATO’s PURL programme – which coordinates the procurement and delivery of military equipment to Ukraine – by a further €50 million.
