European stock markets are continuing the downward trend seen at the end of Tuesday’s session and opened in negative territory, with investors keeping a close eye on the Middle East and wary of a bubble in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector.

Investors are turning their attention to the Middle East today, following fresh US strikes against Iranian positions in the Strait of Hormuz, in retaliation for attacks by the Revolutionary Guard on merchant ships.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the ceasefire with Iran is over and branded Iranian leaders as “scum” and liars.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s over,” Donald Trump told journalists on the sidelines of the NATO summit, which ends today in Ankara, the capital of Turkey.

Trump stated that he “prefers not to deal with these people any more”, describing Iranian leaders as “scum”, “liars”, and “violent and cruel people who would use nuclear weapons if they had any”.

On Tuesday, Wall Street closed lower, with shares in the semiconductor and communications equipment sectors leading the falls, whilst the energy sector was the best performer.

The Dow Jones fell by 0.25%, the S&P 500 dropped by 0.45%, and the Nasdaq fell by 1.16%.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is updating its global economic outlook today, having forecast in April that global growth would be 3.1% and global inflation close to 4.4%.
