Macau, China, June 8, 2026 (Lusa) - Macau's government said on Monday that carbon emissions fell by 59,167 tons in 2025, thanks to the increase in electric vehicle numbers and the greater use of solar energy and natural gas.
The reduction is "equivalent to the annual absorption capacity of 2.95 million trees," indicated the Environmental Protection Services Bureau (DSPA) in its annual report on the state of the environment in Macau.
The report stated that the number of electric vehicles registered in the territory in 2025 increased by 34.6% compared to the previous year, totalling 16,339.
"In recent years, the number of electric vehicles has been continuously increasing," it added.
According to the document, among the new vehicles registered in 2025, the proportion of electric vehicles increased by about four percentage points since 2019, to 38.5%.
The number of electric mopeds and motorcycles increased approximately 16 times compared to the year prior to the launch of the financial support plan, which provided support for scrapping obsolete motorcycles and replacing them with new electric motorcycles in 2022.
"Furthermore, the percentage of citizens who opted to purchase electric motorcycles (...) increased from approximately 2% to 36.8%," added the DSPA.
In 2025, there were 254,393 motor vehicles in Macau, a 0.5% increase from 2024, while the motor vehicle density was 509 vehicles per kilometre, a 1.5% decrease from the previous year.
Furthermore, photovoltaic solar energy systems were installed in three public housing buildings on a new artificial island, known as Zone A, next to the Taipa passenger maritime terminal, and at the Lam Mau wastewater treatment plant.
By 2025, more than 87% of Macau's electricity was imported from mainland China, while the remaining 13% came from local power generation.
"With a view to further promoting carbon reduction efforts, in 2026, the government (...) will increase the percentage of clean energy supplied to Macau to 50%," it added.
Last year, the region spent approximately 2.19 billion patacas (€233.3 million) on environmental protection, representing 2.2% of total public expenditure, "to protect Macau's environment."
