Lisbon, June 1, 2026 (Lusa) - Car sales in Portugal rose by 9.4% from January to May compared with the same period in 2025, with 127,626 new vehicles registered, according to figures released on Monday by the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP).
Of all vehicles registered in the first five months of the year, 110,731 (87%) were passenger cars, 13,328 (10%) were light commercial vehicles and 3,567 (3%) were heavy goods vehicles, according to data released by ACAP.
Sales of passenger cars grew by 9.8% in the first five months of the year, whilst those of light commercial vehicles rose by 2.3%.
In the heavy goods vehicle sector, sales growth stood at 28.3% year-on-year.
In the passenger car segment, the most significant in the market in terms of sales volume, cars powered by alternative fuels account for 73.7% of sales, the same share recorded up to April, whilst petrol-powered vehicles account for 22.4% and diesel vehicles account for 3.8%.
Electric vehicles account for 24.5% of sales, whilst hybrid vehicles account for 29.3% and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) account for 14.2%.
ACAP data on passenger cars show that, from January to May, 11,014 Peugeots were sold, 8,245 Mercedes-Benz, 6,915 BMW, 6,451 Dacia, 6,194 Renault, 6,058 Volkswagen, 5,875 Citroën, 5,756 Toyota and 4,392 Tesla.
In May, 28,904 vehicles (light and heavy goods vehicles) were registered, 6.9% more than in the same month last year.
Of this total, 25,080 were new passenger cars, a segment where sales growth stood at 6.5% compared to May 2025.
At the same time, 3,235 light commercial vehicles were sold, representing a year-on-year increase of 13%.
Sales of heavy goods vehicles in May totalled 589. In this case, there was a decline, with sales down by 7.2% compared to May 2025.
